Historical Note
Florence Cole Vincent was the granddaughter of famed Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole (b. 1801 - d. 1848). Over her lifetime Mrs. Vincent assembled information about her grandfather and his estate and compiled a representative collection of her holdings to be placed in the care of the Greene County Historical Society. The collection deals with the immediate family of Thomas Cole as well as the family of his wife, Maria Bartow, and her uncles John Alexander and Thomas Thompson. The Thompsons, who were the original builders of Cedar Grove, also had considerable land holdings and business interests in Greene and possibly Schoharie Counties. Summary of Contents
The collection contains a variety of material ranging from news clippings concerning Cole to original work by his children. One folder contains information about events where Cole’s work was exhibited and notes comprising gleanings about events surrounding his home in the years following his death. Several folders containing family papers and correspondence of his descendants and the related Thompsons, in particular an indenture from 1770 which is the oldest item in the collection.
