Historical Note

The Brandow and Van Loan families are two of the oldest families of Greene County, NY. Members of these intermarried families settled this section of the Hudson Valley during the early 18th century with particular focus in the area now comprising the township of Athens on the Eastern side of modern Greene County along the Hudson River. The Brandows were notable property owners, William Brandow also being an Albany County Constable in the 1760s. Much of the material in this collection deals with William Brandow and his house which still stands along Route 385 in Athens across from the intersection of Howard Hall Road.

Summary of Contents

The collection contains excellent examples of legal and financial papers, and much of the content was created during the period surrounding the American Revolution. Many late colonial era documents are represented including numerous Indentures from the mid 18th century, some in excellent condition and almost all perfectly legible throughout. Also included are numerous pieces of personal and business correspondence and handwritten receipts of transactions conducted from as early as the mid 1750s onwards.
