Historical Note
Reverend Elbert Nevius Sebring was pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in Leeds, NY from 1884 to 1889. His son, Lewis Sebring, was a teacher at the Old Leeds School. Arad Joy Sebring served as pastor of the Katsbaan Reformed Church from 1886 to 1916 just outside of Saugerties, NY in Ulster County. All men were evidently deeply invested in their communities and parishes, and this collection was amassed during their tenures at the above mentioned religious and educational institutions.
Summary of Contents
The collection contains ephemera and personal papers related to the Catskill Free Academy in the late 19th century, as well as a sampling of material related to the social engagements and community events surrounding the congregations and townships which the Revs. Sebring served in Leeds and Katsbaan. Of particular note are materials related to an 1879 Temperance event, correspondence regarding social events at the Reformed Church in Leeds, and invitations to social engagements in Catskill. Material pertaining to the Catskill Free Academy include the obituary and photograph of Professor Ayers, the Academy Principal, and graduation ceremony materials from the late 19th century with identified photographs of graduating students.
