Become a Library Volunteer

The Vedder Research Library has one part-time employee leading a dedicated team of volunteers who are truly responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the library. Below is a list of available volunteer positions the library is permanently recruiting for. We encourage you to take a look, contact us, and drop in for a visit if you are interested! Volunteers can make their experience as minimal or intensive as they desire, and as a volunteer we expect you to set the hours that work best for you. We look forward to having you on our team.

Available Positions

Volunteer Reference Librarian - Aids the Head Archivist with in-person reference work during normal library hours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Excellent people skills and an ability to learn on the job are required.

Volunteer Collections Manager - The Volunteer collections manager is tasked with working alongside the Head Archivist to assess, stabilize, and create representation for our manuscript collections. Candidates should be able to handle delicate documents, work comfortably alone, and exhibit competence with the Microsoft Office suite of products.

Volunteer Reference Researcher - Volunteer reference researchers are the only researchers who can schedule themselves for work on any day of the week. Volunteers in this position have the interesting job of answering questions submitted by email and phone from researchers from across the country. Ideal candidates for this position should have a basic understanding of genealogy research or a willingness to learn it.

Volunteer Records Digitizer - This position requires a strong understanding of computers and is done to assist the Head Archivist with document preservation. The primary duty of this volunteer is making digital copies of some of our most frequently referenced records.
