Historical Note

The Howland Family can trace its roots in the United States back to John Howland, an original settler of Plymouth, MA who crossed on the Mayflower in 1620. A portion of that line that eventually moved westward and settled in Greene County in the Town of Athens and by the late 19th century Francis Nathaniel Howland had established himself as prominent businessman with interests in New York City. The family held property across the northeastern portion of North America and spent a considerable amount of time abroad with their children. One Howland daughter, Edith, became a renowned sculptress, and many members of the family maintained a collection of their correspondence which serves as the body of this collection.

Summary of Contents

The collection contains mainly correspondence and financial material which serves to illustrate the holdings of the family and the diversity of their business and personal interests and endeavors. The correspondence comprises mainly letters of several female members of the family and details everything from business transactions to time spent abroad. Also included are some photographic materials from around the turn of the century, inventories of estates, and information related to Slocum Howland’s time as Director of the Catskill National Bank.
