Houses of Worship

Over the years, Greene County has been home to more than sixty churches, synagogues, temples, and other communities of faith. Many of them have watched over our communities for centuries, recording life’s most significant moments. For some individuals, these records are the only surviving documentation of their birth, marriage, or death.

This resource will constantly be growing, but our goal is to eventually provide a brief history of each house of worship as well as a catalog of church vital records, meeting minutes, and other materials we hold in our archives. Seeing a church listed does not necessarily mean we have that church’s records in our collection. If you would like to exclusively see churches which we currently have records for, please select “Browse by Records” below.

If you know of historic records that are not listed, please reach out to our librarian at library@gchistory.org. Please note, we will only share records from 1930 and older.
