Historical Note
John H. Bagley, Jr. was a local businessman who was elected twice to the United States House of Representatives (1875-1877, 1883-1885) and once to the New York State Assembly in 1888. Born in Hudson, NY, Bagley spent time on the West Coast in the 1850s dabbling in mining among other activities before returning to Greene County and settling in Catskill. He was supervisor of Catskill from 1860 to 1864 and had interests in several businesses in the Catskill Area throughout the latter portion of his life, including time spent as the Vice President of the Catskill Mountain Railway. Much of this collection pertains to the personal and business affairs of John H. Bagley, Jr., his relatives, and other local ancestors of the donor with the surnames Nichols and Bates. The donor himself, George H. Bagley, served as a trustee and president of the Greene County Historical Society for a number of years in the mid-twentieth century.
