A Walk in Old Loonenburg

Join society archivist Jonathan Palmer for a private history walk through the Village of Athens. This walk covers the entire village from the 1706 Jan Van Loon House to the Old Burying Ground at the back of Mount Hope Cemetery and finally to the Lutheran Church on the north side of the Village. Topics and locations covered include:

  • The Van Loon Cemetery on South Franklin Street.

  • Historic Water Street and Second Street.

  • Discussions of the Village’s early origins.

  • Discussions of the industrial evolution of the Village.

The Complete Tour requires walking roughly two miles around the village and takes two hours to complete. Start and end points can be chosen by guests and can end at restaurants or places of lodging (Stewart House) if that is preferred. Tour is not handicap friendly although we can make efforts to accommodate if you contact us in advance of purchase.
